Microsoft Consolidation Planning Tool for SQL Server (CPT) is an Excel Add-In that helps database architects in planning their consolidation efforts. One can think of the tool as an intelligent calculator – it takes into consideration resources consumed by workloads on the existing systems and user provided business factors that might influence consolidation and generates recommendations.

The target servers are grouped into pools and the source systems can be directed to specific pools to match their business and technical needs. The target systems can be either virtual guest machines or instances on the bare metal servers.

At a high level, the following three inputs are used by the tool to create its recommendations:

  • Output from the Microsoft Assessment and Planning (MAP) Toolkit
  • User input on Business and Technical Factors influencing the sequence in which the source servers may be consolidated
  • Benchmark data related to the source and target systems compute unitsThe output lists sets of source servers for the user to review and evaluate for placement on specific instances of the target consolidated servers.

This is the first tool from SQLCAT that is supported by Microsoft. We are working on additional ones. Please download this free tool from the Microsoft site and give us your feedback:
