More and more business applications are architected as business frameworks, where the core data model of the framework must support customers who work with different database objects and attributes, as well as allow for extensive customization. This paper covers some of the issues that can arise when it is difficult to decide whether to use an object-oriented or relational approach to designing the database. It includes approaches to improve performance and scalability. This paper is for database developers who are familiar with semantic modeling challenges.
